About the vanishing cat: a former next door neighbor shared a story that he was working in a house--reflooring it. After he got the subfloor installed, he started hearing meowing--turns out the owner's cat got down in to the area below the subfloor level and the ceiling below.
Our neighbor was not happy having to destroy some subflooring to rescue the cat.
