I don't wish to be difficult, but no-one of any importance thought the Earth was flat in Columbus's day. They even had a reasonable idea of its size (from the ancient Greeks!) which was much larger than Columbus thought. He was aiming for China, and if America hadn't been in his way he would probably run out of food.
