Dracula: “I Vant to be a Star”

Today, Neatorama has an extensive article tracing the evolution of Dracula from a fairly obscure character in a novel to a pop culture icon, from book to stage to screen. We find out why the character speaks in a strange accent, why his cape has that stiff collar that stands up, and how he changed from a nasty nosferatu to a sexy aristocrat. There are perfectly good reasons for all these things, although they are either practical or accidental instead of artistic. And it also appears to have been a tradition to underpay any actor playing the part, although I doubt that tradition still continues today.
