Macintosh Startup Sound History

Here's a nerdy-as-heck video for Mac users, about the evolution and imminent death of the Mac startup sound. PC users won't find it at all interesting. In 1988, my husband and I finally trashed our ancient Apple II and got a used Mac Plus. Since then, I've used a Mac SE, Mac Classic, Performa, iMac G3, two Mac Minis, and two iMacs. I also have a Cube that I inherited, but haven't yet used. My latest iMac was purchased in 2016, and I hate that it doesn't have a disc drive, but I am glad that it still has the "Bonnnng!" startup sound. (via Geeks Are Sexy

Eyewitness Accounts of Lincoln's Assassination

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated 153 years ago, a good fifty years before we had moving pictures with sound. In 1929 and 1930, Movietone News got interviews with Charles W. Lewis and J.W. Epperson about the assassination. (via Laughing Squid)

I know! You know the updating process is going to take a couple of hours, and that would be fine if you could just start it and go somewhere or take a nap. But updating also requires you to enter your password every 15 minutes or so, or else the process won't proceed. Then after all that, you find out the updates are for something you never use anyway, like iTunes. (via Buzzfeed)

TinyKittens Update

The kittens have been separated from their moms Chloe and Ramona to get the mom's milk to dry up. That's so that the queens can undergo treatment for kidney disease -and Chloe needs dental surgery. Afterward, they will be spayed. But the kitten Aura cannot nurse due to a cleft palate, and she gets to visit Chloe and Ramona. The moms are delighted to see her. Ramona was always diligent about cleaning the kittens and she goes into overdrive with the spit bath. Chloe eventually has to restrain Ramona's zealousness. Meanwhile, the other kittens are busy playing under the watchful eye of Grandpa Mason. You can still follow the family in their livestream.
