RE: 8 Gripping Facts About the Vietnam War Draft
Thinking back to that time and the televised draft lottery: That was cruel, absolutely cruel. Gosh, that is so hard to think about. A friend killed himself right after his birthday was awarded the #1 spot, and he wasn't the only one. I sweated that out until the deescalation. I hope and pray we never have to do something so awful again.

Been seeing more guillotine plans popping up online than last year. Must be a reason for it?

The Time story on Appomattox is a bit off. Grant was indeed lenient in his surrender terms and how he treated Lee did become a cherished part of history. Time got it right on the sword - Grant intentionally made it a point not to request Lee's sword so as not to humiliate him.

As to the subject of parole, the surrender terms written by Grant included "...each officer and man will be allowed to return to their home not to be disturbed by United States Authority so long as they observe their parole and the laws in force where they may reside."

Maybe too generous, but it was intended to set the stage for post-war reconciliation.

Happy Friday Miss C!
