I've actually heard that the name of the reindeer is *Donder*, German for "thunder", to go with Blitzen, German for "lightning." Of course, since the only source I know is "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" I'd assume the source knew the name from folklore... or, just knew a bit of German and guessed.

My husband's cousin lives in North Pole, Alaska. When my kids were little, he'd write them letters from Santa with all kinds of personal details. That town has some great stationery.

Donder is Dutch for "thunder," Donner is German.
