The newspaper article was written and originally published in 1933, when her husband, Diego Rivera, was in Detroit to create a mural for the Detroit Institute of Art. Frida was only 26 years old and had not yet begun to receive the fame and notoriety she now has. While her naive, almost primitive style had attracted some attention, her first solo exhibition (in 1938, at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York) was still five years in the future.

Wow. Just wow. Even without "context," it's supremely patronizing. Typical of the times, yes, but that still doesn't justify it.
Grrrrrrr!
For someone who seemed to do nothing but self portraits, mostly horrendously bad, she got a lot of attention in later life. I'r rather look at her husband's murals!
