The old man has a point. Things change in all eras, and not just the one we are living in now. One thing that is fairly new is that kids can grow up unaware of those changes now, because they have 24-hour distractions available. Excuse me while I have a "get off my lawn" moment. When I was a kid, you only got cartoons on Saturday morning, and you had to go to a theater for movies. We only had one TV, so we watched the news every night. No internet, and the library wouldn't let me take more than a half-dozen books at a time, so I read the newspaper every day. Even as a child, I kept up with the Vietnam War, Civil Rights marches, elections, Watergate, the arms race, and a host of other stuff. The world has always been chaotic. This comic is from Zach Weinersmith at Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.
