This comic speaks to me. Now that the kids have moved out, I've been sorting and discarding years of junk. I found four DVD players and three VHS decks. I really dread hooking them all up to see if they still work. But I need to, because I also found a ton of discs and tapes. I discarded more than half of them, but what's left is pretty good, including home movies. This comic if from Admiral Wonderboat. (via reddit)

Decent working VHS players go for as much as $500. I'm still using my RCA. And I'm still buying DVDs - but usually used or in the Wal-Mart $5.00 bin. I love movies and I like to physically own things.
We've kept all our old tech (except 8-tracks) and use them if not constantly, at least often enough to make them worth keeping. Got tired of replacing and re-buying music round about the move from cassettes to cd's. Maybe it's a Maine-thing gwdMaine, life-long Mainers here. 😁
Well, since I scheduled this comic, I've tested the electronics. I have two DVDs and two VHS players that work fine, so they will furnish the living room (for when the kids are here for the holidays) and my office.
I found that neither flatscreen TV works. The big 36" CRT in my office works good, but it weighs about 100 pounds. I figure I will put sliders under the table it's sitting on, and slide the table to the living room, then slide the TV to the nicer table in there.
There are two CRT TVs upstairs, 24" or so, small enough to carry with a furniture dolly (I wouldn't try to carry one UP stairs by myself). I'll see how they work and maybe bring one down to my office.
Everything left over will go to the electronic recycling place.
I feel your pain, my buddy needed a receiver, and in the process of finding it in the attic I unearthed 6 VCRs, 1 Beta and 5 VHS. I suppose they were all a good idea at the time.
So was the 45 inch CRT TV at 290 lbs.
