Years ago I read an abridged version of David Kahn's classic "The Code Breakers." He explained an early version of simple letter substitution for encrypting messages, then gave an explanation of how it could be easily double-encrypted using a "key" password.

In his example, the password was SWORDFISH.
I never got Kahn's hidden joke until now. Thanks.
