I believe they meant a LEAD mine, assuming that this is Platteville in southwest Wisconsin, which was settled as a mining community after the discovery of galena (lead ore) in the region beginning in the 1820s.-"BB"-
I figure they just meant a mine on the land, and didn't think about how those two words meant something else when put together.
