Garfunkel and Oates have a song for all the losers. I love this, because it embodies so much of what I tell my kids, as they apply to super-selective colleges, try out for scholarships, and look for part-time jobs. I tell them to always make your reach exceed your grasp, because otherwise you’ll never know how far you can go. Besides, you learn more from your failures than you ever learn from your successes.
