Esso (as ENCO and EXXON in the US) was also the company that, in the 1960s, wanted you to "put a tiger in your tank".

Esso, Enco, Humble, Socony, and Mobil are now all Exxon in one way or another. The oil companies descended from Standard Oil is quite a read.

Also SOHIO.

Fun Fact: The Cleveland Torso Killer was largely responsible for creation of the EPA in 1970. How? In September 1936, the killer left body parts of victim No. 6 in a 'creek and pool' off of E. 37th St. in Cleveland, on property belonging to Standard Oil (SOHIO). This 'creek and pool' comprised the refinery's oily wastewater treating unit. SOHIO management was appalled at the bad publicity and ordered the 'creek and pool' to be decommissioned and filled in. As a result, the oily water was then just released into the Cuyahoga River, as there were then no laws forbidding it. Then, in 1969, there was a series of environmental disasters, climaxed by the Cuyahoga River catching fire from accumulated oil. Carl Stokes, a firebrand then mayor of Cleveland, demanded the feds do something about it, and as a result, Richard Nixon created the EPA in 1970, now just another overreaching behemoth federal alphabet agency. Thanks, CTK!
