Totally. The Hobbit explicitly mentions his bees and how huge they are. Seems like a noob fact anyone in the Tolkien's Historical Society would know.
Sounds like Tolkien Scholars are not Environmentalists. Middle Earth would be a much different place without bees. Probably the whole place would be like Mordor.
