I don't return shopping carts for 1 reason, when I worked retail the best break I got away from customers was to go wrangle carts. And it's my way to keep someone employed.

All the supermarkets near me require a coin or token to release a trolley (cart), which probably means more of them get returned. However a friend who lives in a "nicer" part of town had no idea what the token was when I mentioned it to her. She has never seen a supermarket where you have to pay to get a trolley. And of course everyone in that part of town would return them because it just wouldn't be right to expect someone else to do it!
