My son took an online PE class during his high school junior year last year.
There was an academic portion, along with daily activity logs and biweekly evaluations (1 mile run, sit-ups, etc.).
It wasn't that remarkable or noteworthy; it was just an online class. Especially in a post-covid world, kids are pretty used to online/asynchronous learning.
Of course, since this article is from 2005 ... 20 years ago it might have seemed super unusual to have ANY classes online, not just PE. But not in 2025.
