Transactional Education

Year-end Lists 2024: Personal

This has been an eventful year, like they all are. Princess gave me a granddaughter in October! She is a beautiful little girl, born on my late mother's birthday, and named after her own mother (the name is not Princess). I was there in the city when it happened, to stay with my grandson during the birth. Princess lost quite a bit of blood, and was admitted to the hospital instead of going straight home from the birthing center. That was an emotional gut-check for me, since I had never seen one of my children as a hospital patient, but she recovered well. In other news, her husband joined the Army Reserve and will soon become an American citizen.

I changed Gothgrrl's pseudonym to Dr. Doolittle when she graduated from veterinary school in May. She's also moved house twice, vacationed in Spain, bought a car, and started karate lessons. She's now preparing for her January wedding. Her fiancΓ© successfully defended his dissertation, "Oxy-Steam Fluidized bed Gasification of Southern Pine Biomass, Lignite Coal, Plastic Waste, and Their Blends for Hydrogen Production" published in the journal Energy, and graduated in December. They are Dr. and Dr. but they will be keeping different last names.

A big chunk of my year was devoted to remodeling the kitchen, which I already posted about. The garden was smaller than ever, which is just as well since I live alone. Besides, I couldn't do much canning because my stove was out of commission after the end of June.

My church decided that I did such a good job as Chairman of the Board that I should do it another year. I try to feel flattered, but it's one of those things that no one else wants to do.

Tommy (the cat) had most of his teeth pulled, and seems to be much happier with life now. That's sad, because it tells me he was in pain beforehand. Get your pets' teeth checked. Cats and dogs rarely have any trouble eating with fewer teeth. Apollo, at 13, is starting to show his age with arthritis and some hair issues. Marshmallow is a year older than Apollo, but seems the same as ever. Sundae got stuck high up in a tree and was rescued three times this year, each time involving a different stranger on an extension ladder grabbing her and dropping her to the ground. She has now learned that jumping to the ground is survivable.

My family has a lot to look forward to in 2025. Dr. Doolittle is getting married, Princess and her children will be staying with me for three months while her husband undergoes basic training, and I will be eligible for full Social Security benefits by summer. Meanwhile, we are all holding our breath about the H1B visa kerfluffle, hoping Dr. Soninlaw will be able to continue his energy research in the US. I would hate to see him take his American education and my daughter overseas to find work.

Thanks to you for being a part of my life in 2024, and I wish you a Happy New Year and a great 2025!

United State of Pop 2024 (Blame It on the Whiskey)

Every year since 2007, DJ Cummerbund gives us an artful mashup of the most popular pop songs of the previous year. For the year 2024, there's a distinct theme among the 25 biggest hits, and it's more than just a steady dance beat (with a bit of a country twang this time). These songs, or at least the lyrical clips used, all appear to reference regret, blame, and most of all, alcohol. Was it the current zeitgeist that inspired songwriters to go in that direction, or was it the mood of the nation that propelled these kinds of songs to the top? Or was it DJ Earworm's selective editing that brought out that theme? You can hear all the United States of Pop videos from 2007 to 2024 in this playlist.

The Week Between Christmas and New Year's

We are in that weird time between two holidays that are too close to go back to school, but some people have to pretend to work and others don't, and some are dealing with Christmas fallout with guests still hanging around. We all try to act like it's a normal week even though it's not, and until I heard this song, I didn't realize how universal that feeling is.

Is this a weekday or a weekend? Did my Christmas company leave yesterday or the day before? How old are these leftovers? Should I start taking down the decorations? I missed several days of my regular daily activities- will I ever catch up? Is life ever going to be normal again? Brittlestar wrote a little song to put into words how discombobulated we all are, whether we are off work or not. (via Nag on the Lake)

RIP Jimmy Carter

James Earl Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away today at the age of 100. His was a life of public service, from the US Navy to the governments of Georgia and the US, to his 44-year retirement, during which he never stopped trying to make the world a better place.

Carter grew up on a peanut farm in Plains, Georgia, population 600. He met his future wife Rosalynn when he was three years old and she was just three days old. They were married while he attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis and were together for 77 until her death last year.

As a navy lieutenant, Carter organized the dismantling of the Chalk River nuclear reactor after a meltdown in 1952. Listen to the story here. The harrowing project informed his later stance on nuclear policy.

In Georgia politics, Carter leveraged support from both civil rights activists and segregationists, and only revealed his anti-segregationist views after achieving the governorship.

As president, Carter inherited a country that had little faith in its government after Watergate, and a congress that had little faith in Carter. His anti-corruption stance, his reluctance to play the Washington game, and his tendency to micromanage put off the legislators whose support he needed to accomplish anything. He attempted to bring the country together in healing from the Vietnam War by pardoning all draft dodgers, which further divided the public's opinion on him. A poor economy was exacerbated by the energy crisis of 1979. Carter’s response was to ask Americans to cut back energy usage, which did not go down well.

Carter's record in foreign policy was mixed. He signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II with Russia, and engineered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. Carter's decision to allow the deposed Shah of Iran to come to the US for medical treatment exacerbated a bad relationship with the new government in Iran, which blamed the US for installing the Shah in 1941. Iranian extremists captured dozens of Americans at the US Embassy in Tehran and kept them hostage for over a year, until the very day Carter left office.

In the decades since Carter's presidency, the failures of his administration are often seen as due to his commitment to doing what he considered the right thing, even when it was politically damaging or divisive. He was just too ethical for the office.

It was after Carter left office that he became the activist he wanted to be. In 1982, he declared war on the guinea worm, a parasite that caused untold misery in Africa. The infection went from 3.5 million cases per year to just 13 cases in 2022. Carter lent his name and his efforts, along with his wife Rosalynn, to Habitat for Humanity. Over 35 years, he helped build 4,390 new homes.

Carter also worked with world organizations to monitor elections in countries around the world. He worked with Nelson Mandela on issues of global justice and peace. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He also taught at Emory University for years, and led a Sunday school class in his native Plains until just a few years ago. He wrote more than 30 books on subjects from global politics to poetry. There will never be another like him.

That's the way this news report is being described all over. Cats and Babies

Cats have no problem recognizing infants of the human kind. They also recognize when they are no longer infants. My four cats have always been infinitely patient with my grandson. Now that he's two, they are just barely starting to teach him a lesson in how to handle cats. During the week he was visiting, he got hissed at once, and another cat gave him a small scratch for pulling a tail. Otherwise, they put up with a lot. In future visits, I can imagine he will be treated as old enough to know better. (Thanks, WTM!)

When Christmas is Finally Over

I can so relate to this. You love your family, and you love it when they come visit. At the same time, spending weeks getting the house cleaned and the pantry stocked only to see the house wrecked and the refrigerator emptied in no time when they all get there... well, it makes you realized how tiring all this merriment can be. Your normal schedule is thrown off, you tense up hoping to make it through, and everyone is trying their best not to offend each other. You notice everyone's weird behavior while they are noticing yours, too, yet everyone is pretending it's all okay. but that's just the downside. Years from now, you'll only remember the best parts of the visit, and that will give you the strength to do it all over again. These common facets of a family get together are perfectly illustrated by Foil Arms and Hog.

Swimming on the Moon

The question for this episode of the What If? series was, if there were a lake on the moon, what would it be like to swim in it? Well, there is no lake on the moon, but someday there might possibly be as swimming pool. It would have to be sheltered from the elements just like the astronauts have to wear helmets. Safely inside a secured moon base, a pool would be a lot of fun. See, physics works the same on the moon, but the gravity is different from that on earth, leading to the kind of fun Randall Munroe is famous for.

Alas, real astronauts know better than to get their hopes up about a pool on the moon. The cost of transporting that much water would be, dare I say it, astronomical.

Last Call for Mr. Paul

Being late for your flight is a panicky feeling. Jason Paul has no time at all to get on board, and the Munich airport is huge. Luckily, he is a professional freerunner. Catch a golf cart? Too slow. Security lines? Jump past them. Waiting for an elevator? No way! He's gotta catch that plane to Ibiza before it takes off! PS: Don't try this at an American airport, you'll be shot plowing through security like that. (via Laughing Squid)
