Forty-nine years ago, Steve Martin did this on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Martin was pretty wacky, but not as wacky as Carson's suit. The kicker is seeing Sammy Davis, Jr. on the same show and realizing that the entire bit is about Sammy's act.

It would have been interesting to hear Carson's monologue that night. I'm sure he would have made some sort of reference that "coat of many colors" he was wearing.

After a lot of dead ends I finally discovered that tonight show was September 19, 1974, but I didn't find the actual show online.
