Sister Janet Mead recorded "The Lord's Prayer" in 1974 and it became a hit in both Australia and the US. Mead passed away today at the age of 83. The short version of her biography is at Metafilter. She never wanted to draw attention to herself, but it was done in service to others.

Somehow, listening to this, I can smell the inside of electronic p.a. equipment of that era. And leg nylons.
She was a member of the Sisters of Mercy as well. But no, not those.
Super interesting footage. Very girl-focused. I remember this being on the radio when I was a child. I imagined it was performed by hippie "Jesus freaks", as they were called at the time.
Well, the footage is Sister Janet and her music students, so yeah.
Just imagine how much longer this song would be if she sang the Protestant version.

There's no longer much difference between
Catholic and Protestant versions. I grew
up Catholic and am currently attending
Protestant services. The line: “for thine
is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory
forever and ever. Amen” used to be only
in the Protestant version. I'm not sure
when Catholics added it, but I was still
attending that service. One of the things
seared in my brain. When the Priest made
the announcement of the change, there was
an audible gasp from the congregation. I
dunno, I was pretty young. Later, I
related that to a Protestant Pastor and
asked what that was all about. Didn't get
a good answer so probably something about
Martin Luther I guess. . .
