Well, there's conundrum. It was an accident, but it did cost the store money. Trying to justify it only leads down a road of more justification. We've all had mistakes that cost us money and gave the store more, but how big does a mistake/crime need to be before we feel obligated to make up for it? This hasn't ever happened to me because 1. I don't use the self checkout because I'm really bad at it, and 2. I rarely ever check my receipt. This comic is from Chris Hallbeck at Maximumble.

And THAT'S why I don't use the self-scanner. If I'm going to do some of their work for them — ringing up and bagging my own purchases — then I should be getting 5% or so knocked off at the end as some sort of an employee discount or whatever.
