Job Interview

You can always expect those two questions in an interview, even if it's for a Joe job. I read about them just yesterday. The answers I gave for the grocery job I had for a year were "retired" and "you might pay me." The HR woman giggled at both and hired me. This comic is from Zach Weinersmith at Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.

When I graduated college and applied for engineering jobs I would get asked these questions, and they really threw me for a loop. Who knows, I thought, if I will even like engineering? Maybe I'll change professions and become a teacher. Who knows when you are just out of college? And these corporations definitely wouldn't have giggled if I didn't give a serious answer.

Finally it dawned on me that they wanted certain answers and if I stopped overthinking the questions and gave them what they wanted, they were happy and I could get employed. "I see myself working on a successful product for your company!" Sometimes you just have to know your audience.

Right newton, both you and Miss C won over the interviewer and that's the key.

In my case, we both knew it was a horrible job and they were desperate to fill it. Not so desperate as to pay what the position was worth, but they were constrained by union rules. Of course, it wasn't the union's fault that the position carried the duties of two or more people, but that wasn't up to the HR manager, either. I think she probably hated the corporate overlords as much as the rest of us did.
