My cat has definitely retained this gene. Sometimes his eyes are only half-lidded and at other times completely closed. Almost as lovely as when he suddenly, playfully drops and rolls, trustingly baring his tummy.
It was only a couple of years ago that I learned cats use a "slow blink" to communicate affection. So I started doing it to my cats, and they seemed gobsmocked that I could "speak" their language. They are used to it now, and appear to love it.
