The Beach Boys were quite talented vocalists. Listen to the harmonies without the music; they could have released the song like this. Ah, but it wouldn't have done as well on American Bandstand's "rate a record" segment. The only criteria for rating success there was "It's got a good beat, I can dance to it." (via reddit)
