Over the Rainbow

The Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Choral Festival was canceled, but the Chino Hills High School Chamber Singers still wanted to sing. So they coordinated a performance on YouTube, with each member singing from their homes. It's lovely.

This arrangement is the one made famous by the late Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. His version has been featured in many movies, TV shows, and ads, but the reason it always makes me tear up is because it accompanied the death of the ER character Mark Green.

Now I'm Lost

Staying at Home

What do you do when you're staying at home and practicing social distancing? Make a faux retro sitcom intro about staying at home and practicing social distancing! And the rest of us, who are staying at home and practicing social distancing can watch what others are doing to entertain us during our time staying at home and practicing social distancing. By the way, Eleanor Lawrence is not completely isolated. Her boyfriend Kieran Murray was behind the camera the whole time. (via reddit)

The Luke and Leia Scene Cut From The Empire Strikes Back

No matter what George Lucas says, we all know he was making it up as he went along. He really wasn't prepared for there to ever be a second movie, much less a trilogy. But it turned out rather well. The first trilogy had an excuse for making it up as they went along. The prequels were well-planned but relatively boring. And the latest trilogy suffered immensely from bad planning. Still, I can handle that and enjoy all of them for what they are.

When to Act

They say that if drastic action on social distancing and isolation works, then it will eventually seem like an overreaction. Even if it is the very thing that saves us. Meanwhile, the important thing is to be careful who you take advice from. There are bona fide experts, and then there's everyone else. This comic is from David Malki at Wondermark.

An Illustration of the Difference in State Coronavirus Responses

You can see an enlarged version of this graph by Stephanie Jolly at Facebook. It highlights how quick action makes a difference in the spread of disease. Stay strong, Kentuckians; you're doing it right. More on the story here, and even more here. Now imagine is the federal government had taken swift and decisive action at the beginning of the epidemic. (via Fark)

Update: Aaaand the first US Senator to test positive for coronavirus is ...Kentucky senator Rand Paul. It is not clear where Paul is staying during his quarantine.

The Rules of Social Distancing

Since early intervention to limit the coronavirus did not happen in the US, the assumption right now is that everyone will be exposed sooner or later. However, it's very important to make that happen later, in order to spread the necessary hospitalizations over time. That way, there may be ICU beds, ventilators, and PPE supplies replenished. And, God willing, if we put off a lot of infections long enough, there may be treatments and maybe even a vaccine developed before it hits everyone. So learn how to stave off the infection rate by social distancing.

Sports Commentator Just Can't Stop

When sports are cancelled, way more people than just athletes are suddenly out of work. Nick Heath is a rugby commentator in London, but with nothing to comment on in the arena, he's turned his talents to other things. Meaning, scenes from everyday life. Crossing the street, shopping for groceries, or strolling in the park are not earth-shattering events, but with the right announcer, they can be made much more interesting.

You can see plenty more of these at Heath's Twitter feed. (via Boing Boing)
