Jedi Cat Training

Everyone wants to learn how to be a Jedi. Only a select few will learn from the oldest and wisest Jedi master. A lightsaber-wielding toy Yoda teaches a class of Jedi cats-in-training the ways of the Force. The five cats and one dog are a little slow to grasp the lesson, but they sure do pay attention! The yellow ball is an illusion; there is no yellow. It was made by changing the stripes to black and white instead of blue and white. This is an example of subtractive color mixing. (via Boing Boing)

Where Did All The Manic Pixie Dream Girls Go?

The first time I heard the term "manic pixie dream girl," I immediately knew what they were talking about, and I thought of Goldie Hawn. She was that character in most of her movies, but I particularly thought of Butterflies are Free. The cinematic stereotype, however, became very common in films in the 21st century. I believe the character came to be used to represent young women who are each convinced she's "not like other girls." The main plot revolves around how such a quirky, free-spirited character changes a young man's conservative, restricted viewpoint and makes him more accepting and appreciative of a woman who is somehow different. Still, when the same character shows up so many times in so many movies, she stops being "different" and comes across as just plain ditzy. The character is not exactly going away, but evolving into less of a stereotype and into a more complex personality, which is only appropriate.

Die Hard is a Christmas Movie

I honestly thought we'd settled this two years ago, but apparently people are still arguing about whether Die Hard should be classified as a Christmas movie. I mean really, if Miracle on 34th Street can be a Thanksgiving movie, a Christmas movie, and a courtroom drama all at once, why can't Die Hard be a Christmas film and an action movie? Sure, it's a matter of opinion, but those who think it's not a Christmas movie are wrong.

Disney+ UK recruited Alfie Boe and The Kingdom Choir to sing an anthem explaining all the reasons why Die Hard should be part of our Christmas movie marathons from now until the end of time. It is set to the tune of "Ode to Joy" from Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. (via Geeks Are Sexy)

Furiosa

In 2015, the world went crazy for Mad Max: Fury Road. Nine years later, we get another look at George Miller's post-apocalyptic world with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It's a prequel that tells the origin story of Imperator Furiosa, this time played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth co-stars. The movie is directed by George Miller, with several of his collaborators from Fury Road returning for the prequel.

You might be surprised that the kidnapping of young Furiosa is set at 45 years after the collapse, years before she meets Max, who was a young adult during the collapse. But considering how this world has been altered and retconned since the first Mad Max movie in 1979, you shouldn't think about it too much. Like Fury Road, Furiosa tells a story that has nothing to do with the real world. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will open on May 23rd in Australia and May 24th in the US. It will also be shown in IMAX theaters. (via Metafilter)

Movie Title Drug Deal

The Fine Brothers have teamed up with POYKPAC Comedy to bring us a drug deal in which the entire story is told using only movie titles. There are plenty to choose from. Hook me up! Still, when the drug deal is over, the story is just beginning. (Thanks, Benny! And Ryan!)

Creepy Clowns: The Horror Behind the Laughter

In 2016, America was gripped by a slew of creepy clown sightings in cities far and wide. These sightings vanished as suddenly as they began, and there was no rhyme or reason for them other than it was just "a thing" for that year. But that wasn't the beginning of the clown as a monster. The iconic clown character was invented as comic relief, dressed up as silly as possible to distract us with physical comedy. But that heavy makeup and happy-go-lucky act struck us as someone who is hiding their true nature.

The roots of clowns that range from untrustworthy to downright murderous go back further than you might think, but it's only been in the last 50 years or so that we have more horrifying clowns than humorous clowns. Today, you'd have a hard time finding a just plain funny clown in pop culture. Dr. Emily Zarka looks at the history of creepy clowns and the psychological forces that make them the monsters we see today.

The Best of Gary the Stormtrooper

Robot Chicken gave us a lot of Star Wars silliness over the years. One of the funniest characters is Gary the Stormtrooper, voiced by Donald Faison of Scrubs. This compilation gives us his best scenes. I had only seen the first one, and now my sides hurt. Gary tried to drive the Death Star, but not because he wanted to. We find out what really happened to Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. And Gary meets an Ewok, which does not go well. Adult Swim UK made several of these compilations for Darth Vader, The Emperor, Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett, the Droids, and Han Solo. (via Tastefully Offensive)
