You might be surprised at how many features cars have these days to prevent theft. Older cars without intricate electronics may be easier to repair at home, but they are also easier to hot wire. Almost all newer cars have safeguards built in, which is one of the reasons that replacing a car key is a real headache these days- but still better than having your car stolen. So what to do? My normal method of guarding my vehicle from being stolen is to always drive a car that no one else wants. To be honest, that was not a deliberate choice, but it seems to work so far.
