In Moe Howard's biography, Moe Howard and the Three Stooges, he relates that the studio frequently scraped up thrown pie residue for reuse - in the same pans but with new crusts - as an economy measure. He says that the reused pie residue frequently contained the stuff that you would find on the floor of a soundstage - splinters, broken glass, metal screws, etc. Larry was once nearly blinded by some of this stuff. They also made the "pies" taste bad so that Curly wouldn't eat any of them.
