The Phantom of the Horse Opera

When I was a little kid, I loved the cartoon Beany and Cecil. I hadn't seen an episode in decades, because you just didn't expect that to be possible in the 20th century. Then WTM wrote a post for Neatorama about the cartoon's origin in a puppet show called Time For Beany, which I didn't even know about. Checking in at YouTube, I am struck by Beany and Cecil's combination of utter goofiness and clever cultural references. There are worse ways to spend six minutes.

Albert Einstein was a fan of the show. On one occasion, the physicist interrupted a high-level conference by announcing, "You will have to excuse me, gentlemen. It's Time for Beany." Musician and composer Frank Zappa was also a fan, as was Curly Howard, Harpo Marx and Brian Wilson.

Psst, Bruce... In the 21st century, we know those things are possible. They weren't in most of the 20th. I grew up never expecting to see a movie twice. My kids are different.

I always rooted for Dishonest John, myself.

That was interesting. I didn't remember the kid at all, but I do remember Cecil. I thought the show was called "Cecil the Sea Monster"! We didn't have a TV when I was a kid, so I either saw this at someone else's place, or saw repeats years later when we did get a TV.

Vireya, I'm the same way, I didn't even recall what Beany looked like, but I will never forget Cecil.
