What's the old saying — "When in Rome.... ?" If they wanted to measure things in degrees Celsius, then they should have stayed in one of those other 194 countries that measure things that way.
And personally, I will use the so-called 'European'-style seven when hand-writing something where there might be confusion between the digit '1' and quickly-scribbled sloppy '7'. I also will, if I think there might be a need, put a 'slash' through a zero to differentiate between 'zero' and the letter 'O'. So it is not strictly a European thing.
