Chasing the Cicada: Exploring the Darkest Corridors of the Internet.
How to defend yourself when your photo is ridiculed on Reddit. You go, girl! (via the Daily Dot)
How America abandoned its “undeserving” poor.
A new TV show tells the story of a 440-pound man who sent his girlfriend to the hospital the first time he had sex. The actual guy from the story showed up in the reddit thread to expand on the story.
Things You Didn't Know About Reindeer. Like how their pee breaks became a unit of measurement.
What happened when a troupe of dancing drag queens joined a Christmas parade in Alabama. Everyone either loved it or hated it -no middle ground.
What's the best gift you can give your dog? Maymo received 210 empty bottles last year, and had the time of his life with them!
Guess what the most annoying word in America is. Go on and guess. I'm sure you'll agree with the answer.
The Christmas truce. It wasn't an official truce, but in 1914, British and German soldiers laid down their guns for a day and played soccer with each other.
Jewish Christmas Traditions. Even those who reject all manner of Christmas celebration have developed traditions for Christmas Day out of sheer pragmatism.

The Christmas Can Can
I've skipped most of the musical Christmas light displays this year because they all seem to look and sound alike after a while. But the music and choreography on this one made me laugh! Music teacher Tom BetGeorge put up 70,000 lights on his home and programmed it to "The Christmas Can Can," sung by the a cappella group Straight No Chaser. If you are near Newark, California, you can see the house perform at the corner of Lafayette and Rushcin. (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

The National March to Save Bigfoot
Join the Facebook event The National March to Save Bigfoot!
Bigfoot should be labeled as an endangered species. We should do everything we can to preserve this majestic creature because he's totally real and stuff.
On the last Saturday in August gather somewhere convenient and march around while making up chants about saving Bigfoot. Signs are optional but encouraged. Gathering in groups is fun but stomping around in your back yard by yourself shouting about saving Bigfoot is also encouraged.
-brought to you by the council for getting worked up over imaginary things
(Thanks, Bill!)

A Visit to the American Girl Store
About 12 years ago, I wandered into the American Girl store in Chicago with my young daughter who needed to find a restroom. We were directed upstairs to the restaurant, where I was surprised to see young ladies who seemed way too old to be playing with dolls sitting at tables with their dolls, wearing matching outfits, as if that was normal. That was my introduction the American Girl dolls. The whole experience seemed creepy to me, but the store in Los Angeles that Conan O'Brien visited was much fancier. The sketch takes a quantum leap into funny when the doll he dines with begins to speak! (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

16 404 Pages That Are Worth the Error
The poem above is old, but the sentiment is universal. I first saw the verse at Plinko's error page, but the original author is nowhere to be found, although the verse owes a lot to Edgar Allan Poe. Looking for something on the internet that leads to an error page is frustrating, but there's an art to alleviating the reader's pain. Only this, and nothing more. Some websites make their 404 page entertaining in itself, and a few make it a real treat. Check them out in this list I posted at mental_floss.
