Tweet of the Day

Cat food companies have to walk a fine line to make cat food stinky enough to appeal to cats while not making their owners sick. The smellier the better, as long as it's fish or meat. Meanwhile, cats cannot understand how we humans eat those awful plants, or even abide the odor. (Thanks, WTM!)

Sad Coincidence

From 1928. (via Undine)

The Galaxy Being

"The Galaxy Being" was the very first episode of The Outer Limits, which debuted on September 16, 1963. I will never forget that day because that was the day I ran away from home.

I was a couple weeks short of five years old. My mother went grocery shopping and took my baby brother. My father fell asleep on the couch watching TV. It never occurred to me to do anything else when the TV was on, so I watched the show. I didn't understand much of the plot, but the glowing alien was so terrifying that I grabbed my security blanket and my stuffed kitty and just walked away from the house in tears. The show came on at 7:30, and it wasn't yet dark. I was maybe three houses down the street when a lady came out and asked where I was going. She walked me home, and Mom was back by then.

I explained what happened, and Dad asked why I didn't just turn off the TV. I didn't know how! My parents controlled the TV. But I got a lesson that evening. I don't recall "waking up Dad" offered as a possible solution, but I might be wrong about that. It was more than 60 years ago.

What Noises Should Electric Cars Make?

Have you ever been scared when an electric car snuck up on you while you were walking? That happened to me about ten years ago. I was on a sidewalk, but I immediately thought of what would happen if a cat or a kid were in the road. We are just used to loud car engines. So car manufacturers started adding noises to cars, even though they don't need them to function. But when the sound is superfluous to the vehicle's function, those sounds don't have to mimic a combustion engine. What sounds should a car have to be the safest for pedestrian, cyclists, and animals? Car companies are working with audio engineers and sound designers to perfect the sounds of a quiet car for optimum safety while trying not to annoy everyone who hears them. (via Digg)

There's Gonna Be Fireworks

What could be more appropriate for the Independence Day than a song from Schoolhouse Rock set to video clips from the musical 1776?

I've seen colored peacocks and white peacocks, but I've never seen one that is both! This is not a chimera, but a pied peacock, which were bred for their color pattern. (Thanks, WTM!)

Apt Name

On Deadpool & Wolverine

The new film Deadpool & Wolverine opens July 26. It is the first MCU movie with an R rating. Sure, the first two Deadpool movies were rated R, but they were produce by 20th Century Fox and weren't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, they inherited Deadpool. Viewers thought they'd seen the last of the character at that point, but now Disney is ready to take the plunge.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds help us to get ready for the new film by going over what we need to know about the two superheroes,. After all, it's been 15 years since we saw X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The first Deadpool movie was eight years ago, and the sequel is six years old. Oh yeah, and it's been seven years since Wolverine died in the movie Logan. However, Deadpool & Wolverine involve both time travel and alternate universes, so anything is possible. Anyway, Jackman and Reynolds catch us up on what happened in the previous movies.

The Deadpool movies so far stand out from other superhero films due to emphasis on comedy amongst the violence, the R rating, and the character's constant breaking of the fourth wall. We already know that the new movie will be funny, but will Wolverine join in the fourth wall shenanigans? We will find out on July 26th.

An Honest Trailer for Beverly Hills Cop

Beverley Hills Cop: Axel F
hits theaters this weekend. It is the fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise that started in 1984. Screen Junkies goes back forty years to the movie that started it all. Warning: revisiting the original may ruin the new movie for you. We won't know until someone actually sees it.

In 1984, Eddie Murphy was already quite popular from Saturday Night Live, his standup act, and a couple of movie roles. Beverly Hills Cop was his first as the solo star, and became the biggest movie of 1984, with 14 weeks at #1. This video makes us remember why. Beverly Hills Cop made Murphy a superstar. The two sequels, from 1987 and 1994, couldn't hold a candle to the original. While Honest Trailers are usually pretty devastating, the parts they pick on in this one are honestly funny.

Death From Below

The stargazer fish was named that because it has eyes on the top of its head. But it’s not stars that this fish is looking for -it’s food! The stargazer wiggles its body and digs into the ocean floor with its fins until it is completely buried, except for those eyes. When a smaller fish swims by oblivious, it leaps from the sand in a terrifying instant. Enjoy the action in this compilation video, with a decidedly strange musical accompaniment, and then read more about the stargazer fish at Atlas Obscura.
