I'm try-lingual. I will try to learn the niceties: hello, please, thank you, etc. I always ask they write it down for me because I'm visual. If I can see it written, it stays in my head longer. I never make fun of someone trying English. I only correct them if we have more than a passing acquaintance and only if they want to be corrected. For me, speaking another language is much like knowing music: you're one up on me!!
