Romiaou & Juliette
Here’s another feline lip dub masterpiece from Faireset! A cat named Amaron is trying to seduce a lovely lady cat by reciting Shakespeare’s prose from Romeo and Juliet en Francaise -as well as he can recall it. He does a pretty good job, too, until he starts to feel a nap coming on. (via Tastefully Offensive)

I Married a Monster from Outer Space
Intriguing idea, huh? The 1958 movie I Married a Monster from Outer Space was originally released as a double bill with The Blob. It would have had top billing if The Blob hadn't been in full color, but till proved to be a hit among audiences. Want to see the full movie? Here's the colorized version.

Istanbul's Cat Island
The people of Istanbul are noted for their love of cats. In addition to pets, the city has thousands of strays that people feed and interact with as a matter of course. The island of Heybeliada in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul, has become known as Cat Island. The 200 or so cats who live in the park there are clean, well-fed, and socialized to humans. If you stand still for a minute, or better yet, sit on a bench, they will approach you expecting affectionate petting. One hotel on the island warns visitors to not bother coming if you don't like to be around cats. They may be "community cats," but they are not exactly strays. Someone is providing these cats with everything they need so they don't have to fight with each other over resources. (via Fark)

It doesn't matter how smart you re -or aren't- everyone has a tendency to compare themselves with others, which only sets you up for misery. That's the basis for most of society's woes, like income inequality, bigotry, and war. Probably has a lot to do with depression, too. Sometimes it's better to just not know. A History of Italian Pasta
The custom of eating boiled unleavened dough arose in many different places. China had noodles thousands of years ago, and Africa and the Middle East had their own versions. But pasta is an Italian word, derived from Latin, and pasta is most often associated with Italian cuisine. That country went all in on designing different kinds of pasta and making it accessible to the rest of the world. When Italians started emigrating to America in large numbers, they not only brought new varieties of pasta dishes with them, they expanded and adapted those recipes until Americans were hooked on them. After 13 Years in a Cage, Lion Relishes the Feel of Grass
It’s a bittersweet story. This lion spent 13 years in a circus, confined to a cage too small for an animal this size. He was taken to Rancho dos Gnomos sanctuary in Brazil, where he has a much larger enclosure. It’s not the savannah, but it has room to run, grass to roll in, dirt to dig in, and trees to rub against. You can almost feel the joy when he realizes what a great place this is -compared to what he had. (via Boing Boing)

How The Little Mermaid Should Have Ended
I always had a problem with the message in Disney's version of The Little Mermaid. A young girl completely changes herself to please a guy she only knows from afar, and then has to seduce him with just her looks. Somehow, that leads to a happy ending. Yeah, there are plenty of other things wrong with the fairy tale, as in all the Disney Princess film, at least the classic ones I have seen. But the folks at How It Should Have Ended just target the most obvious flaw, so it's a short video. There's a post-credit scene that has nothing to do with the fixed ending, but it's funny. The new live-action version of The Little Mermaid opens nationwide next weekend, presumably with the same ending as the 1989 animated version. (via Geeks Are Sexy)

Hedgehogs and the City
A couple of hedgehogs wake up from winter hibernation and find that a city has been built over their burrow! They aren't the only animals who were surprised by the change in their environment. How will they ever survive? But woodland creatures are keen to adapt, and soon learn the ways of the city. They actually learn better than the humans ever did, and manage to get by just fine, thank you. The cute stop-motion animation Ezi un lielpilseta is from Latvian filmmaker Evalds Lacis. Space Iris
I would recommend seeing this beautiful abstract video in full-screen mode. Do the images remind you of the iris of the eye? Or are these images of space nebula? The point is that they do look alike, as if there is some great cosmic design that links them together. The movement of the images is mesmerizing, and may make you feel as if you are on some peaceful but mind-expanding theme park ride.
Ruslan Khasanov edited together hundreds of high-resolution stills to make the video Space Iris. According to Colossal, he uses the movement and interaction of liquids that don't quite blend, like water, oil, and paint to create his images. (via Kottke)
