Cher Does America

In December, I posted a video in which Cher did West Side Story by herself. I lamented that it didn't include "America." That doesn't mean she didn't perform it some other time! Here she is, with Charo, from 1975. It's the duet of the single-named women.

Otters See the First Snow of the Year

Japanese otters Hana and Kotaro get excited when they see snow falling! They think it's cold outside, but it's not that cold, since the roof is dripping and their watering holes are not frozen. But the snow is just right for making and playing with snowballs -even in a bathtub. Otters are naturally well insulated against cold, even in the water. Watching these two have so much fun is otterly delightful. (via Metafilter

How to Make Rose-Shaped Dumplings

Chayhana Vostok shows us how to make the prettiest dumplings you've ever seen for any special occasion- especially when you want to impress someone. They look like roses, but inside each is a combination of meat, potatoes, and onions. The dough is the tricky part. The red sliver of it is made with fresh beet juice. The video of the construction is mesmerizing, and conveys what could never be described in text only. You can turn on the captions to get an English translation, but she also posted the ingredients list at YouTube.Note that the dumplings must be steamed for 30 minutes. You want the meat to be cooked.

Boppity Bunny

It’s been a while since we heard a song from Parry Gripp, and this one is about bunny love!
I’m a Boppity Bunny and I need your love
Visit me at the bunny shelter, give me a hug
Drive me to a fancy restaurant in your car
Set me down on the lettuce in the salad bar
These bunny rabbits were filmed at the shelter called Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter (B.U.N.S.) in Santa Barbara. They are available for adoption. (via Tastefully Offensive)

Binging with Babish: Tater Tots from Breaking Bad

You might recall a memorable scene from Breaking Bad known as "Franch." It shows the character Peter Schuler consuming his last meal before committing suicide, a taste testing session that is so tragically mundane that it's downright silly. And since it involves food, it's another subject for Binging with Babish.

Andrew Rea makes every condiment from scratch, using fresh ingredients. They sound delicious, although labor intensive, with the exception of using corn syrup for authenticity. You can substitute sugar or honey if you want to make them yourself. Even the ketchup is made from scratch, which would be more appealing if it were made in summer with red tomatoes. Even the Tater Tots are made from scratch! Rea makes them with a recipe that's akin to potato pancakes. The recipes for all these sauces, and the tots, too, are available in text at the Binging with Babish website.

Flying Robot Spider from Japan

The University of Tokyo's robotics department has developed a terrifying and impressive robot that walks on four extended legs and flies, too. They call it SPIDAR, which is a tortured acronym for "SPherIcally vectorable and Distributed rotors assisted Air-ground amphibious quadruped Robot." The challenge of this robot was making it powerful enough to walk and fly while keeping the weight low enough for air travel. SPIDAR uses 16 thrusters to fly, and to assist the small servo motors used for walking. This is a prototype that's not all that efficient, and it's really loud. But it accomplished its purpose, and will no doubt be refined to make it actually scary.

This little girl is not yet two years old, but she’s learning the basics of Tahitian dance from Tahitoa Productions in Guam. They normally take students starting at age three. The little girl above is getting a head start! (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

Why Indeed?

Stone Blue

Every once in a while you hear a song that sounds vaguely familiar, but you haven't heard it in years because it wasn't archived in most radio stations' oldies rotation. I heard the title song from the 1978 album Stone Blue by Foghat a week or so ago, and made a note to look it up. This old recording of a live show is not all that clear to see, but all the other videos of the song have nothing but a static image.
