BB-8 at Star Wars Celebration

When we saw the first trailer for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, everyone was amazed by the new droid design. We all assumed it was some sort of CGI, but today, he appeared in the flesh, so to speak. Real people got a close-up look at the droid named BB-8 at Star Wars Celebration going on this week at Disneyland, as he was unveiled during a panel discussion with JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy. R2D2 was there, too, and had a few words to say to the newer droid. Oh yes, a new trailer for the film is out.

Women in Medicine: Dr. Anandi Joshee

The Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania was the first medical school in the world established (in 1850) to train woman as medical doctors. We read about how one of its first students, Ann Preston, became the first woman dean of the school, in the previous post Women in Medicine: 6 Pioneering Activists. The medical school went on to graduate many pioneers in the medical field. One of them was Anandabai Gopal Joshee, who was not only the first Indian woman to receive a Western medical degree, but also the first known Hindu woman to travel to America. Can you sift data from a small clue your opponent let slip? Singapore TV host Kenneth Kong posted a puzzle at Facebook. Apparently, he and his wife have been arguing over it. Now, countless workplaces are losing man-hours while people try to figure it out on their own, or are else trying to explain it to each other. Kong says it’s a Sec 3 question, passed to him by a P5 student. That means it's meant for 8th graders, but was passed along by a 5th grader.

  
I don’t think there’s any math involved, technically, but there are numbers, so if you give up and just want to know, the answer is here. The explanation is pretty easy to understand, and it makes me glad I didn’t tackle it. After all this, I doubt Cheryl will be receiving any birthday gifts. (via Uproxx)

It was once a great struggle for a woman to even be considered for a medical degree in the United States -or anywhere, for that matter. Only the strongest, most dedicated women managed to do it, and they deserve to be remembered for their efforts. Avengers Family Feud

The show Jimmy Kimmel Live! staged a celebrity version of Family Feud starring the actors who portray the Avengers in Marvel’s movie series. Watch Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Hemsworth squared off against Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner. Yes, hey split into the teams of “stars I recognize” and “stars I don’t recognize.” They weren’t very good at the game, but that doesn’t matter because they don’t need the prize money -as if there were any. Rowing Team Attacked by Fish

A rowing crew from Washington University in St. Louis was practicing in Creve Coeur Lake when they rowed through a school of Asian carp. The invasive species didn’t like the disturbance from the nearby motorboat, and jumped into the air to show their feelings. One of the seats was lost in the attack, but I believe the students are okay. There’s no mention of whether any fish were left in the boat- I hear they are pretty good eaten’. (via Arbroath)
