Like You Do
I heard this on radio this morning somewhere in Illinois, and thought, "I love this song! Why haven't I heard it in twenty years?" Meanwhile, oldies and rock stations play "Keep on Lovin' You" every day. Sure, it was a big hit ("Like You Do" wasn't even a single), but "Keep on Lovin' You" is not only worn out, it's lyrically unpleasant. That's a problem with radio programming; it's so easy to not bother digging into an old band's catalog. This performance is from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1977. The song is from REO Speedwagon's second album R.E.O./T.W.O. from 1972.
What It's Actually Like To Have A Lobotomy
A couple of weeks ago, we learned how lobotomies became so popular. It was a desperate measure to treat mental illnesses that we couldn't treat, but of course many people endured the surgery who shouldn't have. Even for those with serious mental disorders, lobotomies proved to be a hit-or-miss treatment, and the doctors who performed them really didn't know why. Altogether, it was a shameful period in medical history. Yes, it's true that some people's lives actually improved after a lobotomy, but those were the minority. The real tragedy is how eager doctors were to provide lobotomies for people suffering from such varied illnesses as seizures, schizophrenia, depression, dyslexia, and teenage rebellion, often just relying on a relative's reporting to make a diagnosis. Throughout human history, it appears we just can't seem to let go of the dead. We long to see our loved ones again, but at the same time, the thought of spirits wandering among the living scares the daylights out of us. It's also a way to explain away the unknown things that frighten us even more just because they are unknown. Over time, belief in ghosts went from comforting because it was evidence that our souls continued after death, to terrifying, because we can't control what mischief those lost souls want to practice on the living. Insects can do horrible things to each other in the name of survival and reproduction. Parasitic wasps lay their eggs inside other insects, which then hatch and eat their way out. Or they may control the host insect's behavior in bizarre ways that benefit the parasite's species. It's pretty gross to even think about, but now you can see it happen. This guy is dressed as a camera, but he really puts the mustard on it by actually being a camera! He's known as cameraaman_studio in various social media sites, and this costume really does take pictures. The camera isn't just for Halloween, either. He shows up at all kinds of occasions where people are dressed in costume, mostly in Japan, so he can shoot their pictures. Notice the image of the latest picture he took- it has a QR code on it. That way, the people who are in the photograph can claim it and order copies. This is an idea that exists on the boundary between cosplay, mascot, and busker.
