Ferris Beuller's Day Off: Saved in the Edit

A filmmaker's vision for a movie, the script, the resulting footage, and the finished product are often four very different stories. At any stage of the process, the team may decide that they need to go in a completely different direction.

John Hughes wrote the screenplay for the 1986 movie Ferris Beuller's Day Off in less than a week, and shot the film to follow that first draft. Once the scenes were assembled, the first cut was two hours and 45 minutes long! Even worse, test audiences didn't like it. Enter legendary editor Paul Hirsch to save the movie by editing all the footage that had been shot. Not only did he shorten it, but most importantly, he rearranged all the sequences. When you see what order they were in originally, you'll see how this made a vast improvement in the pacing and the audience's emotional involvement. (via The Awesomer)

Dry Ice and Slime

The Crazy Russian Hacker stumbled upon the perfect party special effect when he added dry ice to a bowl of green slime. And I learned there is such a thing as slime powder. The main effect seems to be that the release of gas from the dry ice is slowed down in the slime. This leads to nice round bubbles, sturdy enough to pick up at some points, and easy to see against the colored mess in the bowl. There are also cool-looking vents and eruptions. You’d have to lay down some rules about playing with it if there are children around, though. (via Viral Viral Videos)

How the Government's Riskiest Labs Contain Deadly Viruses

Government laboratories run by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) do research on virulent diseases like smallpox, ebola, and Marburg virus in order to keep us all safe. But what about the people who work in those labs? The safety protocols have to be on the level of The Andromeda Strain. And just like that book and movie, the strictness of the different levels correspond with the danger in the virus being studied. The first level is on par with what hospitals require of visitors to an infectious patient with, say, flesh-eating bacteria. Don't ask me how I know. Above that, the protocols get very serious. The most serious of these virus labs is one that hasn't even been built yet, but will cover a big chunk of ground in Atlanta. This video from Half as Interesting is only seven minutes long; the rest is an ad. (via Digg)

Cat Food

When will humans ever learn? Or in this case, an alien? Cats like what they like, and it's not the same thing they liked yesterday. I have bought cat food by the case before, and try to resist the urge to do it again. This comic is from Tom Savage at Ash & Raimi. (via reddit)

Deadpool and Mario

In which the superhero duo of Deadpool and Wolverine from the new R-rated Marvel film drop into the super-wholesome pixelated world of Mario and Luigi. The incongruence is the very definition of comedy. Mario is his usual self, but Deadpool has plenty of snark to add, and Wolverine is just overly violent. Our favorite Italian plumber is bit scandalized by Deadpool's worldview. I think Deadpool likes a world where he can come back from the dead, but Wolverine knows that this is just as likely to happen in the MCU. That's what the multiverse is for! (via Geeks Are Sexy)

This is How You Get Raccoons

Hey, I know! Let’s give the raccoons something else to eat, and maybe they’ll stay out of our bird feeders! You can see what this leads to- more raccoons, as they invite their siblings and cousins to the nightly smorgasbord. Then with a regular food supply, the raccoons have plenty of free time to produce litters of more raccoons! The homeowner who recorded this says they’ve been doing it for a few years now, and he lives in a secluded area where there are no neighbors to annoy.
