They say possums are the problem, but the reality is that mankind has ripped out the forests and planted trees for timber (lumber where you is) ... they have chopped down the native bush and planted grass to feed the dairy and beef steak cattle. The New Zealand bush, so famed in postcards and tourist advertisements, has been razed so they could plant corn, soy, beans, carrots, and every other vegetable you can think of.
What was left they have paved over for roads and highways, or built factories, storage sheds, and homes.
But yeah, blame the possums for ruining everything.
The government arm for 'conservation' drops poison from planes and helicopters, a poison named 1080, and if you come here you will thousands of cars with the bumper sticker saying BAN 1080.
And that 1080 poison is eaten by possums, deer, native birds, all the wild animals, the mice, the hedgehogs, the rats ... often it falls close to the massive farms, and then the cattle die in pain as well as the native fauna.
As always, you have to be careful what you believe, a lot of people have their own reasons for killing things, and it is usually for money.
I am boots on the ground, and the truth is if we want to protect the natural flora and fauna, we need to get rid of the humans.
Maybe Bill Gates was right all along.
