First They Came

You already know the poem by Martin Niemöller. Here is a much longer version just for 2025.



First they came for the undocumented immigrants, and I said nothing, because I am not an immigrant.

Then they came for the career civil servants, but I said nothing because I am not a civil servant. 

They came for the scientists, and I said nothing because I am not a scientist.

Then they came for the lawyers and the universities, and I said nothing because that doesn't affect me personally.

Then they came for the White House press corps, and I said nothing because I am not a journalist. 

Then they came for the legal immigrants, and I said nothing, because I am a citizen.

Then they came for Medicaid and SNAP recipients, and I said nothing, because I am not a recipient.

Then they came for the farmers, manufacturers, and small businessmen, and I said nothing because my livelihood is not threatened by tariffs.  

Then they came for school children, and I said nothing, because I already have those vaccinations. 

Then they came for the comedians, and I said nothing, because I am not a comedian. 

Then they came for the protesters, and I said nothing, because I hadn't said anything all this time. 

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.
