Christine Jorgensen was not the first person to undergo gender transition surgery, but she was the first that most Americans knew about. She was a media sensation when she returned from Denmark as a woman in 1952. Although she had people flocking to meet her, she had to be terribly lonely being a pioneer in that day and age.
