Buster Keaton Chase Scene

In the 1925 film Seven Chances, Buster Keaton spends almost four minutes running for his life from an avalanche of boulders. Much funnier than it sounds. You can see the entire movie here. (via Metafilter)

Drug Use in the Viking Era

People have always been into non-medical drugs, from mind-expanding hallucinogens for religious rites to painkillers to escape the grinding stress of everyday life. And for some, mood-altering drugs could aid in warfare.

We all know that you stay away from someone who is in a drug-induced frenzy, because they may have lost all sense of self-preservation. That was the story of the berserkers, who were said to be immune to fire and weapons during battle. The more likely story is that they just didn't care, and that terrified their enemies into retreat or submission. It must have been the drugs. (via Boing Boing)

Why Cats Have Vertical Pupils

One of the more distinctive features of a house cat is its weird vertical pupils, which don't seem all that weird to us because we are really familiar with cats. But pupil shapes vary all along the spectrum of the animal kingdom, and each shape has a purpose for the lifestyle of its owners. In the TED-Ed video, we learn about pupil shapes in a variety of animals, including the extremely weird rectangular pupils of a goat. (via Laughing Squid)

Man Fakes Arrest for Proposal

Matt Van Vliet got roughed up by the cops until his girlfriend Samantha Labo was in tears. Then when the cop went through Van Vliet’s pockets, he found an engagement ring and it all turned out to be a hoax -he just wanted to propose to her! It was all captured on the police officer’s dashcam. We get an idea of why Van Vliet wanted to stage this unusual proposal from CNN.
Van Vliet and Labo met when they were arrested at an underage drinking party in their freshman year at Colby-Sawyer College. After a Breathalyzer test showed no alcohol, they were let go, but they continued talking and began dating a month later. So, when he decided to propose to his girlfriend of four years, Van Vliet reached out to the officer who arrested them.

"At first I was going to say no, because it's not something you would typically do or get involved in, but because of the involvement of how they met I felt compelled," said Police Chief Andersen.

Anderson said when Van Vliet called with the request, he told Anderson that if the two hadn't been arrested, they wouldn't be together. When Anderson agreed to help, Van Vliet also asked the officer to get Labo wound up.

"I felt honored to do it for them; it's nice to do something fun," said Anderson, who made the "arrest" on his own time.
It must be true love, or else she would have killed him. Or at least let them haul him to jail. (via The Daily Dot)

Sleeping with the Cheetahs

Dolph C. Volker works with lots of wildlife species, but he has a special place in his heart for cheetahs. At Cheetah Experience in South Africa, he took the opportunity to go sleep in a cheetah enclosure on a rainy night. Would the cats mind? Would they come and try to share his blankets? In this video, Volker explains cheetah hierarchy and decision-making, but all we really want to do is see a guy snuggle with three 100-pound apex predators that also happen to be kitty cats. Not the Kind of Thing You Forget

This comic could have stopped just about anywhere and be funny, but I'm glad it went all the way to the end. It's true that science can't explain everything, because science as we define it is a learning process. But it can explain the difference between a door and a mirror. This comic is from Jim Benton.
