Kittens!
If you haven't been keeping up with the TinyKittens live feed, the feral black cat Ramona gave birth to five kittens today. They are thought to be four boys and a girl, but that's not 100% certain. Two other cats, Chloe and Rula, are expected to go into labor at about any time. Meanwhile, you can check out the big family in their nest in the live feed. They will go back to multiple cameras when the others show signs of labor.
How Tax Brackets Have Changed
An interactive graphic at Vox explains how tax brackets have simplified over the years. You'll learn a lot by going through the entire interactive and exploring what happened, but you can look at this one still from it and see how income inequality has been boosted and how the government lost so much money that it has to run on deficits. It's no wonder that the ultra-rich consider Ronald Reagan a saint.
And lest you think that a rate of 94% was a lot in the past, remember these are marginal rates. Rich people in 1944 only paid 94% tax on the amount they made above $2.6 million that year, which was a very small number of people in 1944. Their first couple million was taxed at a lower rate, and their first million was even lower. Their effective tax rate was well within the bounds of normal.
Then us proles have to think, "Why does anyone need more than a few million in income in a year?" So they can destroy their competition (the Walton family). So they can buy and sell the rest of us (Mark Zuckerberg). So they can create monopolies (Jeff Bezos). So they can wield political power (Koch brothers). So they can play with expensive toys (Elon Musk). And once in a great while, so they can give it away (Bill Gates).
All in all, American don't pay enough taxes.

The Walking Dead Season 8 Finale
The season eight finale of The Walking Dead aired last night, and I watched it alone. I have some thoughts to share, so if you're avoiding spoilers, read no further.
One the one hand, I'm glad the war with the Saviors is over, because it was getting really old. But on the other hand, a resolution that leaves everyone with a super happy ending is too implausible even for a zombie apocalypse. We are used to a stroke of luck saving our heroes, but in this episode, there were multiple strokes of luck and perfect timing that favored only one side. Toning down even one of them would have made a better story.
Eugene only came up with his sabotage device the night before, and had to execute it absolutely perfectly, while working all night with a crew who couldn't be in on the plan. Every bullet had to malfunction in the exact same way, except for the ones he gave Negan to test fire, and no one else test fired at all. And then they all shot simultaneously during the battle. In addition, Eugene suddenly developed acting abilities he never displayed before to throw every off. Believable from Josh McDermitt, but not from Eugene. At least Rosita got to punch him.
Oceanside showed up during the most crucial moment with fire bombs that luckily did no damage to the Hilltop's wooden fences, seconds before they would have had to smother the baby. Why did Oceanside save the day after Tara betrayed them, Rick took their weapons, and Enid killed Natania? The only explanation is that these young women warriors really miss having men around.
We could see Rick letting Negan live coming a mile away. That's what happened in the comics, and the Carl story line foreshadowed Rick's mercy turn. But I expected something way more satisfying, in that Rick explains his mercy to Negan, and then Maggie or Dwight shoots Negan through the head from a distance. Or Negan suffers a quick aneurysm. Or commits suicide rather than surrender.
Dwight not only lucked out in surviving threats from both Negan and Daryl, but he found evidence that Sherry is still around. She wins the 2017-18 Hide and Seek Championship.
Gabriel's eyesight returns after the battle is over. I don't really begrudge him that, but it put a cherry on top of all the other happy endings and highlighted how implausible the whole episode was.
Maggie's anger is totally relatable, and her time as leader of the Hilltop community makes her upcoming scheme against Rick believable. I can see Daryl signing on, too, because who knows what's going on in his mind, ever. But Jesus going along with the plan doesn't make any sense at all. He's supposed to be the peacemaker, the merciful one who doesn't want to kill people unnecessarily. It would make more sense that he's just sitting back and listening at this point, but The Walking Dead is not that subtle.
What was the most implausible thing about the season finale is that no one with a name died in the final battle. The only people who died were nameless Saviors. That's some kind of luck.
Oh, I enjoyed watching the show while it was on. Only after the fact did it seem awfully dumb. I'll keep watching it, as it's the only TV show I watch, along with Fear the Walking Dead. By October, I'll get over being cheated out of the death of Negan that I was looking forward to.

A Trip Through New York City in 1911
Once you get over how strangely natural this glimpse of New York City from 100 years ago is, you start to notice how differently public space was used at the time. This was before roads were designated for cars, http://www.neatorama.com/2012/04/29/the-invention-of-jaywalking/ and were used by pedestrians, horses, and vendors as well as motorized vehicles. You might notice several elderly men with missing limbs, then you realize this is only 50 years after the start of the Civil War. The Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern shot the original footage in 1911. Guy Jones adjusted the film speed to make it appear more natural, and added sound effects. (via Metafilter)
How to Save Money on Healthcare
Save money on expensive American health costs by farming it out to countries who see medical care as a social service instead of a profit-making opportunity. Plow the savings into travel technology. Wage stealth wars as a by-product. Genius! The pushback will come from the same people it comes from now -those who are profiting. They ended up recreating a scene from their movie Meet the Parents.
How Hostess Cakes Are Made
Come close and watch robots in Emporia, Kansas, make Hostess cupcakes, donettes, and Twinkies! No, we're not going to get any recipes, but we will see battalions of cakes marching in formation through the factory as layer after layer of sweet sugary stuff is added to them. Cream filling? Check. Frosting? Check. Swirls? Check. Powdered sugar? Check. You might get a sugar high just by watching, but my guess is that you'll go find a sweet snack right after it's finished.
