Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Celebration Reel
To drum up excitement for the new movie Star Wars: Rogue One, Disney has released a video of some behind-the-scenes footage and quips from the cast and crew. This was first shown at Star Wars Celebration in London. It’s not enough to let is know what’s happening, but enough to let us know that it looks awesome. It does focus on violence a lot, which is not indicative of the finished movie, but works for previews. The beach scene was filmed in the Maldives. (via The A.V. Club)

Robot Free-for-all
At the grand finale of a Robo League meet, 17 battle bots go at each other at the same time. The fight starts about 2:30 into the video. Keep your eye on the one called Wedgie; he doesn’t win, but he’s entertaining. You’ll be able to pick the winner before the battle is half over, but the destruction is delicious. (via reddit)

Delightful Insects of Summer
Yeah, you say you hate bugs, but what you really hate are mosquitoes, flies, and ticks. Believe it or not, there are plenty of attractive, beneficial, and/or fascinating insects to enjoy, which you can read about in this classic article I posted back in 2007 at mental_floss.

An Honest Trailer for Ghostbusters 2
The entire internet is asking why we need a remake of the perfect movie, meaning Ghostbusters. Screen Junkies remembers when we asked that question back in 1989, when the sequel to the original 1984 film was launched. Yes, it was a sequel, but the whole idea was to recreate the magic, so Ghostbusters 2 ended up being a rehash. In this Honest Trailer, we get a shot-by-shot rundown of how the sequel was the same as the original. It still made over $200 million. The new remake hits theaters tomorrow, and it at least has different actors. (Thanks, Paul Panday!)
Why College Costs So Much
I went to a rather expensive private college, but that was 40 years ago. After scholarships, my bill was about $2500 a year (I only went three years), and I ended up borrowing $5K. Which I paid back, at $50 a month, within a few years. Now I have a kid in college and two more starting this fall. The costs are frightening. It’s a good thing they all got substantial scholarships and grants.
But that part about college professors’ salaries was shocking. My father was a tenured science professor, and adjusted for inflation, he never made anything near that much. So I looked up the stats, and found that if you take out law school and medical school professors, the average drops way down. Then when you consider how many undergraduate classes at universities are taught by graduate students or part-time adjunct professors, you realize that the tuition you’re paying is not getting your student the benefit it should.
