Sir David Attenborough Narrates Curling

BBC Radio 1 knew that we’d all listen if David Attenborough did the commentary during an Olympic curling match. He explains it all so clearly and soothingly. Now we understand the primal urge to thrust one’s nuts down the frozen river -and its importance to the species. Attenborough should  do this for every Olympic sport. (via Viral Viral Videos)

The World Wishes Colin Happy Birthday

Colin’s Mom wrote:

I am Colin's mom, I created this page for my amazing, wonderful, challenging son who is about to turn 11 on March 9th. Because of Colin's disabilities, social skills are not easy for him, and he often acts out in school, and the other kids don't like him. So when I asked him if he wanted a party for his birthday, he said there wasn't a point because he has no friends. He eats lunch alone in the office everyday because no one will let him sit with them, and rather than force someone to be unhappy with his presence, he sits alone in the office. So I thought, if I could create a page where people could send him positive thoughts and encouraging words, that would be better than any birthday party. Please join me in making my very original son feel special on his day.

The response was way more than she expected. Read more about it in an article I wrote for mental_floss.

Cat Collapses Sochi Arena Ceiling

The Adler Arena Skating Center in Sochi is the building where the Olympic speed skating competition takes place. The building was completed in 2012. However, you have to wonder how well it’s constructed when a five-pound-or-so cat walking around in the ceiling causes it to collapse and takes a bunch of ceiling panels with it. This security footage is from October, so the incident has no doubt been death with and repaired. The cat appears to have made a clean getaway. (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

The Day He Found Luna

Imgur user hiblue fed a stray kitten and wasn’t prepared for her response. She flirted and grabbed him and begged to be taken home. And her scheming wiles worked wonders. He named her Luna.

It was a long day and she slept hard. I've never rescued an animal before and all of this was new to me. I can't even begin to explain how rewarding and fulfilling it all was. It was a huge highlight of the year.

See a series of pictures that tell the story at Imgur. (via The Chive)

Armadillo Dances to “Billie Jean”

An armadillo was spotted gathering leaves. I don’t know why, maybe she’s building a nest or something. Anyway, theataraxian decided she needed a proper soundtrack to go with her smooth moves. (via Tastefully Offensive)

On second thought, it might not have been that great an idea to equip the cat with adamantium claws. He’s obviously having a little trouble getting used to them. Still, I’d go see this movie! (via Tastefully Offensive)

Supermarket Wine Date

Norwegian prankster Freddy Fairhair sent a video in which he wines and dines female strangers in an American supermarket by sharing wine off the shelf with them. Cute, but it didn’t strike me as hilarious, until a supermarket employee confronted him with the vast cultural differences between Norway and the unfamiliar territory of the U.S. (not to mention the currency exchange rate). That left an impression! Freddy’s partner in crime Luke left a comment:

Also, the strawberries ended up being super organic giant super strawberries from the Himalayas or some chit so those strawberries ended up being $18 Lmaoo.

Yeah, the end is the funny part. -Thanks, Fred!

How Wolves Change Rivers

Our natural ecosystem is a delicate balance. When you take one part of it away, the results can be unforeseen and even catastrophic. But Sustainable Man tells us a story of one case of man correcting that imbalance. In 1995, wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park after being absent for 70 years. In the 19 years since, the park has undergone a number of astonishing changes that can be traced to the wolves. By the time the video was ending, I fully expected to hear “The Circle of Life.” (via reddit)

The LEGO Movie Bloopers and Outtakes

The LEGO Movie opened at #1 at the box office last weekend. I doubt that this video contains any actual spoilers. It’s an awful lot of trouble to make a blooper reel for an animated film, but often worth the effort. Most of these are actual bloopers from the audio recording sessions made into animated sequences, although a few are actually scripted. (via Viral Viral Videos)
