RIP Jane Goodall

Jane Goodall, who knew more about chimpanzees than anyone, died today while she was on a speaking tour in California. More at Neatorama

"Thousands of people who say they 'love' animals sit down once or twice a day to enjoy the flesh of creatures who have been utterly deprived of everything that could make their lives worth living and who endured the awful suffering and the terror of the abattoirs - and the journey to get there - before finally leaving their miserable world, only too often after a painful death" - Jane Goodall

My youngest daughter, Dr. Dolittle, was heavily influenced by Jane Goodall. I recall dressing her for Scientist Day at school, with shorts, ponytail, and a plush monkey. She also wanted to work with elephants, which she has already accomplished.

Jane Goodall started making a name for herself and for chimpanzees when I was about 10. I already had a thing for critters of all kinds. Seeing her on documentaries made me realize I wasn't all that weird after all.
She was a dear friend though we never met nor corresponded.
