One hundred and ten years ago today, three people died when the ice bridge at Niagara Falls collapsed. Ice bridge? It was a natural phenomenon that happened in winter. The ice and slush that came over the falls piled up at the bottom until it completely crossed the river, and it was usually pretty sturdy. Tourists would walk out onto the ice bridge and play, even sledding down its hills. That is, until February 4, 1912, when we found out how unreliable a natural ice bridge can be when it's pummeled by millions gallons of water. They don't do that anymore. (via Nag on the Lake)
