In the images from Internet Archive Books, the Chocolate Worm Cakes, Googling the three ingredients, are apparently for deworming humans.

It was like three lifetimes ago when I
first had chop suey. It was mostly a
weekend thing when no one wanted to
cook. Terrible doesn't begin to describe
it. I remember this gluttonous gray mass
of - whatever (it wasn't La Choy of La
Choy makes Chinese food! fame either.
Which was just as bad. But I digress.).

And all those water chestnuts which to
this day, the purpose of which I still
do not understand. This would have been
the 1960s. And so ended my relationship
with Chinese food. Until the early 80s
when I reluctantly agreed to going in on
a lunch buffet at work one day. Szechuan
beef. Which to this day remains my
favorite Chinese meal and marked the start
of my healthy relationship with the cuisine.

It's still on the menus of course and I'm
always looking to try something new. But
every time I see it and think should I give
it a go? - Nope. Can't do it. Maybe back
then we really were having entrails or
something. I dunno. . .
