When I was in school, I was once accused by a teacher of looking up words in a dictionary just so I'd know what they meant. I asked her, "Isn't that what dictionaries are for?"
Apparently for her, they were only used to check the correct spelling and she hated having students who used words which were above her own, rather limited, vocabulary level. She would regularly mark me down for using the wrong word or misspelling words I knew were correct.
Our librarian, however, was a delight. He would regularly challenge me with more advanced reading material and later casually quiz me on what I'd learned. I believe I learned more via his kind tutelage then I ever learned in any of my other classrooms.
