In our church, one of the 'big' issues was smoking because 'your body is a temple' etc. Someone I respected very much made the point that all the big issues, (smoking, homosexuality, divorce etc) were made big because they were easy for most people to follow and that made them feel righteous. Never mind not helping the poor, storing up riches on earth, not loving thy neighbour etc.
