Rumbling My Ears

This is a thing? People do this? How? Is it real? This is like the time I learned (on the internet) that some people never wash their feet in a shower, or that some people stand up to wipe after using the toilet. Or maybe this is just something made up to get us asking questions. The comic is from Chris Hallbeck at Maximumble.

Or something just made up for the comic.

I do this. But I didn't know it was a thing. Yawn and 'listen' to the sound in your ears. Then try doing it without yawning. When I was a child I wondered if other people could hear me make that sound and it kind of worried me.

Can confirm, it's real! And also happens involuntarily with a big yawn. I remember as a kid asking my brother if he could hear it when I made the "noise" (nope).

I can do it. When I was a kid I could only do it with my eyes clenched tight, but later figured out how to do it with my eyes open.

Apparently some people can do it with a "click" or "pop" that regulates pressure. It doesn't do that for me though, just the rumbling, wooshy sound.

My ears occasionally do this on their own involuntarily (very rarely). I had never actually read about it or knew that anyone else could do this, much less control it. It makes me feel better about my ears.

Okay, I think what y'all are talking about is popping one's ears. Since I live in mountain country, I can certainly do that. I had to teach my kids to do it when changing altitude. It just never occurred to me to do it for any other reason than to adjust pressure!

I can also pop my ears (and both things can happen at the same time), but it's a different movement and a different sound than the rumbling. The popping is like a short, staccato crinkling noise; the rumbling is lower and I can do it continuously (without gaps) for a couple of seconds until it's too annoying.
